About the Club

by Web Master last modified Sep 19, 2018 06:19 PM
The Gem & Mineral Society of Syracuse was formed in 1951 to stimulate community interest in mineralogy, paleontology and the lapidary arts. We are located at Suites 14 & 15 in Ponderosa Plaza, 209 Oswego ST, Liverpool.

We are a community of individuals with interests that include collecting, identification and display of minerals and fossils, and the many aspects of jewelry design and fabrication. Our goal is to stimulate Community interest in Mineralogy, Paleontology and the Lapidary Arts. GMSS is a 501(c)(3) Public, Non-Profit organization.

Membership Benefits:

  • Regular monthly meetings stimulate the club’s social and educational aspects. General Membership Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7:30 PM, excluding July, August and December, when other Club functions (GemWorld, GMSS Picnic, Club Holiday Party) take place.
  • The Marie Cole Skill Center, located in our Clubhouse, provides members with access to lapidary equipment and classes on how to use it to make components for jewelry and other designs.
  • Scheduled field trips during the spring and summer months providing collectors with opportunities to find specimens as well as visiting area geologic sites.
  • Our monthly newsletter, The CRACK ’N CAB, keeps our members informed about the society's programs and activities. It also contains articles of interest about rockhounding and creating jewelry from specimens.
  • Our auctions let members purchase materials while supporting the club. Auctions occur at the regular member meetings. Click Here for Auction Rules.
  • An extensive lending library is available for member's use.
  • Lapidary and mineral display contests give members a chance to share their work/collections with others in the spirit of friendly competition. Click Here for Display Contest Rules.
  • The club has both formal and informal affiliations with other regional and national organizations that share our interests.

To become a member download button our membership form (PDF format) and bring it to the next meeting. Annual Membership dues are $10 for adults, $5 for juniors (under 18) and $15 for families. Renewals are due each September.
